Welcome to the Textile & Sewing Area at East Essex Hackspace in Hawkwell. Whether you're altering clothes, quilting, embroidery digitising, machine knitting, or cutting vinyl for a small business, this area supports everything from hobby crafting to serious production work.

We have a mix of robust everyday machines and advanced digital embroidery equipment, plus fabric stock and specialist tools.

Sewing Machines

We have:

  • 1 × Brother AE2500
  • 3 × Brother AE1700

These mechanical sewing machines are reliable, easy to use, and ideal for:

  • Clothing repairs and alterations
  • Dressmaking
  • Soft furnishings
  • Workshops and beginner sessions

Having multiple identical machines allows us to run group sessions and community classes effectively.

Embroidery

We operate a Brother Innov-is NV880E computerised embroidery machine, capable of producing detailed, repeatable designs.

It is commonly used for:

  • Custom logos
  • Club badges and patches
  • Personalised clothing
  • Small business products

Designs can be imported digitally, making it ideal for professional-quality output.

Knitting

We have a Toyota KS858 flat-bed knitting machine for producing knitted panels and garments more quickly than hand knitting. It is suitable for structured pieces, garments, and experimental textile work.

Digital Cutting

Our Cricut Maker 3 allows precision cutting of:

  • Heat transfer vinyl
  • Adhesive vinyl
  • Fabric
  • Paper and craft materials

This is frequently paired with the embroidery machine to create fully branded garments and merchandise.

Fabric & Materials

We maintain a stock of assorted fabrics and donated textiles for prototyping and creative use. Members are also welcome to bring their own materials.

What This Area Enables

  • Clothing repair and upcycling
  • Custom embroidered workwear
