Brother Innov-is NV880E Embroidery Machine

The Brother Innov-is NV880E is our dedicated computerised embroidery machine at East Essex Hackspace. It enables members to produce professional-quality embroidery with precision, consistency and repeatability.

This machine is used for everything from personalised gifts to small-batch branded merchandise and club apparel.

Overview

The NV880E is a single-needle embroidery machine designed specifically for embroidery rather than general sewing. It features a large embroidery area and an intuitive colour touchscreen interface, making it accessible to beginners while powerful enough for experienced users.

Members can import digital embroidery files via USB and stitch complex multi-colour designs automatically.

What It Can Do

  • Embroider logos onto clothing
  • Create custom patches and badges
  • Personalise garments, towels and gifts
  • Produce small business merchandise
  • Add decorative designs to textile projects

The machine automatically handles thread changes, trimming and stitch sequencing, allowing accurate and repeatable output once a design is prepared correctly.

Typical Uses at the Hackspace

  • Branded polo shirts and hoodies
  • Scout, club and society badges
  • Custom name embroidery
  • Prototype fashion designs
  • Small production runs for makers

It is particularly useful for members testing business ideas before investing in their own equipment.

File Preparation

Designs are typically created using embroidery digitising software and saved in compatible file formats before being transferred to the machine via USB/Wifi. Members can either prepare their own files or work with others in the space who have experience in digitising.

Good file preparation is essential for clean stitch quality and efficient production.

We have Brother PE-3 software, but Inkscape has the Inkstitch extension which is just as capable at preparing.

Prints can be printed from your phone as well.

Training & Access

Induction is required before independent use. This covers:

  • Correct hooping techniques
  • Threading and tension basics
  • Stabiliser selection
  • Safe operation
  • Basic troubleshooting

Once inducted, members can use the machine for independent projects
